The History of Christ the King Church, Murdeshwar

Christ the King Church, Murdeshwar, lying on the backdrop of the magnificent Arabian Sea and the lush Western Ghats, is a gift from our ancestors. The town gets its name from the Hindu God Shiva, called Murdeshwar. It attracts tourists from all over the world. Among the non-Christian families, the presence of about 240 Christian Catholic families adds grace and beauty to this place. The Church is situated on the coast of the Arabian Sea, which is 13 km away from Bhatkal Taluk in Uttara Kannada District, under the pastoral administration of the Diocese of Karwar. It has been an abode of God, and all those who have passed through this place have experienced the divine touch and have become better human beings.
A chapel made of palm leaves was dedicated to Christ the King in early 1956 under the administration of Holy Cross (Santa Cruz) Church in Manki village of Honnavar Taluk. Rev. Fr. Honoratus, the Parish Priest of Manki used to visit here once a week for the spiritual needs of about 80 Catholic Christian families. It was then part of the Diocese of Belgaum.
During his visit to Murdeshwar, Most Rev. Dr. Ignatius Lobo, the Bishop of Belgaum, looking at the devotional enthusiasm and spiritual needs of the people, decided to raise it to an independent church. Thus, in 1956, the four missionary substations of Manki Parish, namely Bailur, Murdeshwar, Ternamakki and Shirali, were established as independent parishes.
The Catholic community was fortunate to be ministered by saintly Fr. Vincent Pereira as the first parish priest. It was he who built a small church with a tiled roof. He was also looking after the spiritual needs of the Ternamakki, Shirali and Bailur. He served the parish from 1956 to 1975. It was his interest and vigour that made so many people come closer to the church and spiritual life.
The Bishop then entrusted the pastoral care of the parish to the OFM Franciscans in 1975. Fr. Nicholas D’Souza OFM was the first Franciscan to be appointed in Murdeshwar. Looking at the increasing number of people, Fr. Nicholas D’Souza OFM repaired the existing Church and constructed the portico of the present church. The Franciscans continued to serve even after Karwar was bifurcated from the Diocese of Belgaum and made a separate diocese in 1977. They served the Parish from 1975 to 1993. With their systematic family visits and catechesis, they deepened the faith of the people and gave them a sense of belonging to the parish and the diocese. The elders remember with gratitude the hardships and sacrifices of these saintly priests.
Presently, the parish is pastorally taken care of by the diocesan clergy. Due to their witness and perseverance, the enlightened laity has been forming itself into a worshipping and serving community.

My vision for this Parish – Through loving service to the Christ the King -My earnest desire is to establish the kingdom of Christ in the hearts my people and make this parish Christ’s Kingdom. "ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತ್ ರಾಯಾಚಿ ಫಿರ್ಗಜ್ : ತಾಚಿ ರಾಜ್ವಟ್ಕಿ, ಪದ್ವಿ ಆನಿ ಮಹಿಮಾ ತುಮ್ಚ್ಯಾ ಕಾಳ್ಜಾನಿಂ ಸದಾಂ ರಾಜ್ ಕರುಂ". Towards realizing this vision, I have some plans and projects in my mind, which will be executed in the days to come. I will continue the good work began by previous served parish priests. I expect the wholehearted co-operation from Parishioners, Devotees of Christ the King and well-wishers of Our Church and Community.
